With the increasing number of international students coming to China, teaching Chinese as a foreign language faces both opportunities and challenges.International students often face cross-cultural communication conflicts during their living and studying in China. Some scholars point out that second language competence is the key to solving intercultural communication difficulties.
This book adopts the survey method and ethnographic case study method to analyse the characteristics of the pragmatic strategies of Chinese request speech acts of international students from Korea, Russia and France, to analyse the trajectory of their pragmatic competence development, and to analyse the main factors affecting the development of their pragmatic competence. The findings show that Korean students' requesting strategies are most similar to those of Chinese students, French students are very different from Chinese students, and Russian students are in between. In addition, this book distills a theoretical model for explaining the development of international students' pragmatic competence based on ethnographic case studies. The model suggests that cultural background and situational factors will trigger learners' reshaping of motivation and acculturation attitudes, which directly determine the breadth and depth of learners' participation in linguistic communication, which ultimately has an impact on the development of pragmatic and sociolinguistic competence. This book will bring some inspiration to teachers' teaching, international students' learning, teaching materials writing and international students' management.
