According to the author of this book, the polemic between Chinese Marxism and anarchism was a major ideological polemic in the history of the development of socialist thinking in modern China, and it was one of the three major polemics of the May Fourth period that had a wide influence and lasted for a long time, which pointed out the direction of development of the socialist revolutionary movement in China. From then on, Chinese socialist thinking shifted from anarchism to Marxism-Leninism and embarked on a Russian-style revolutionary path. The polemic was also a key event in the respective development paths of Chinese anarchism and Marxism, with far-reaching effects on the development of both. The polemic clearly distinguished between the two different theories of social revolution; it broadened the influence of each side, further enlivened the Marxist and anarchist movements, and led to a reorganization and division of personnel within the socialist revolutionary camp. This polemic was a boom to bust in the history of the development of anarchism, and it was a new starting point for the widespread dissemination of Marxism in China. It shifted the Chinese revolution from the “ideological revolution” of the May Fourth New Culture Movement to the real “political revolution” under the influence of the October Revolution in Soviet Russia, and helped Marxists to draw a clear theoretical line between anarchism and anarchism, complete the transition to Marxism, and promote the establishment of the early Chinese Communist Party.
