This book has a relatively comprehensive understanding and unique thinking on the current research status of ancient Chinese novels. Starting from the general direction of national characteristics of Chinese novels, the book analyzes the current major problems in the study of Chinese novel history, such as the uncertainty of research objects, the contradictions in novel theory and literary history writing practice, and the serious thinking of evolutionary theory, and puts forward feasible solutions on the basis of a large number of materials. First, on the basis of a detailed and profound analysis of the concept of "novel", the research object of Chinese novel history is clarified, and the origin time of Chinese novel is determined to be the Western Zhou Dynasty. Second, it focuses on the idea of evolution in the study of Chinese novel history, uses many examples to demonstrate literary phenomena that are contrary to evolution theory in the history of novels, and puts forward a new concept of "ancestor phenomenon". Third, for those important works that have not gained their due status in the history of Chinese novels, such as "Shangshu", "Analects", "Zuo Chuan", "Chinese", "Yanzi Chunqiu", "Zhuangzi", "Han Feizi", "The Legend of Lienu", "Wuyue Spring and Autumn", "Qin Cao", etc., the book also discusses their artistic achievements from a new perspective and points out their position in the history of novels.
