本书来自操瑞青的博士学位论文，该篇论文曾获评江苏省优秀博士学位论文称号。“有闻必录”是近代中国新闻活动中影响颇大的新闻用语，至今仍时常现身于当代中国的新闻实践中。本书将近代新闻业置于社会变迁的宏观背景下，追溯了其“有闻必录”口号从兴起到衰落的整个过程，试图据此窥测中国新闻活动百余年发展中所呈现的文化底色与本土特征。

This book is based on the doctoral dissertation of Dr. Rui-Qing Cao, which was awarded the title of Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of Jiangsu Province. The phrase “有闻必录” is a highly influential journalistic term in modern Chinese journalism, which is still frequently found in contemporary Chinese journalistic practice. This book places modern journalism in the macro context of social change, traces the whole process from the rise to the decline of the slogan “有闻必录”, and tries to examine the cultural undertones and local characteristics of the development of Chinese journalism in the past hundred years or so.
