本书共分四章，由四个主题组成，即“佛教与传统社会”、“佛教与知识分子”、“禅宗与禅学”、“佛教历史考证”。在这四章内容中，每一章都选取中国佛教史上的特定人物、事件或思想、著作，进行分析评论，并以年代先后为线索，组成一个逻辑性与思想性统一的完整体系。本书的特色是注重历史细节的考证，由历史细节体现出中国佛教历史的复杂开展和思想义理的丰富内涵，对佛教与中国传统社会、佛教与中国知识分子、禅学与禅宗等问题进行了细致的论述。在一定意义上，本书能够丰富人们对中国佛教史的认识，并推动对一些问题的进一步研究。

周建刚，1971年生，哲学博士。湖南科技学院国学院教授，湖南省濂溪学研究会副会长，曾任湖南省社会科学院哲学研究所研究员。主持完成2011年度国家社会科学基金项目“周敦颐与宋明理学思想谱系研究”以及多项湖南省社会科学基金项目。著有《周敦颐研究著作述要》《章学诚的历史哲学与文本诠释思想》，合著《中国传统文化之“中”与“和”思想研究——源流篇》，参著《湖湘文化通史》《湖湘文化辞典》等。在《哲学研究》《光明日报》等刊物上发表中国哲学史研究论文30余篇。
