This book focuses on the Confucian classic The Analects of Confucius and its interpretation and dissemination in different historical periods and cultural contexts. The book explores the lesser known English translations of the Analects in the 20th century, analyzes the construction of the image of Confucius in the Analects and the Gongyang Zhuan, as well as the dissemination of the Analects from the Liang dynasty state school to the fringes of the Tang empire. In addition, the book discusses the core concepts of “Tao,” “virtue,” and “benevolence” in the Analects, analyzes the interaction between Confucian and Taoist thought, and how these ideas are being interpreted and applied in modern philosophy and Ethics. The book also deals with the relevance of the Analects of Confucius in cross-Channel politics and its value in modern administrative wisdom and spiritual reconstruction. As a whole, the book revisits the contemporary significance of the Analects from a variety of perspectives, including language, philosophy, ethics and culture.
