本书选编了作者自1983年以来从事明史研究的论文22篇，分为三个部分：第一部分制度·文化，包括论文11篇；第二部分档案·文献，包括论文7篇；第三部分学术·回忆，包括回忆文章3篇和1篇综述。研究涉及面广泛，内容丰富，涵盖明代政治、经济、法律、军事、財政、文化、宗教、社会、中外关系、档案文献等诸多领域，是关于明史研究的整体思考与细部叙事、明代历史发展进程脉络研究、明代国家与社会的理论探讨，以及发掘整理利用明代档案文书等方面的学术探索。

万明，女，1953年生。北京大学历史学硕士。中国社会科学院古代史研究所二级研究员，原明史研究室主任。现任中国社会科学院“登峰战略”资深学科带头人，中国中外关系史学会会长、中国郑和研究会副会长，中国明史学会首席顾问，国际郑和学会顾问。长期从事明史和中外关系史研究，主要著作有《中国融入世界的步履：明与清前期海外政策比较研究》、《中葡早期关系史》、《明代中外关系史论稿》、《晚明社会变迁：问题与研究》（主编，第一作者）、《明本〈瀛涯胜览〉校注》、《明代〈万历会计录〉整理与研究》（与徐英凯合著）；在国内外发表《明代两京制度的形成及其确立》、《明令新探》、《白银货币化：明朝中国与全球的互动》等论文百余篇。
