Compared with Western historiography, although there are also theoretical and methodological changes behind the evolution of ancient historiography in China, on the whole, there is a lack of conscious in-depth discussion and analysis of theory and method. Since modern times, under the influence of Western academia, China's historiography has achieved fruitful results in the process of gradual modernization and integration with world academic research, but it still lacks in-depth research on theories and methods in a real sense, especially the lack of discussion of theories involving the fundamentals of the entire discipline, and some influential theories, methods and schools in recent years can see the figure of Western historiography, and the prosperity of China's historiography is still more reflected in concrete results. The same is true of historical geography, and unlike other disciplines of history, historical geography should actually belong to the sub-discipline of geography 8432302, which involves theories and methods in addition to history, more should be geography, but due to the origin of China's historical geography and its later development path, there has been a serious gap between China's historical geography and geography for a long time, and the study of historical geography lacks the understanding, absorption and application of geographical theories and methods. Moreover, from the current research, although most historical geographers believe that historical geography should belong to geography in terms of disciplinary attributes, in actual research, China's historical geography is far more influenced by traditional historiography than by geography. Due to the lack of discussion of theories and methods, although the research team of historical geography has developed rapidly and academic achievements have become increasingly rich in recent years, neither the discipline as a whole nor each sub-discipline has been able to produce breakthrough results with wide influence in the field of history or geography for a long time, and the existing problems are becoming more and more prominent, and even the foundation of some sub-disciplines has been shaken. At the same time, historical geography tends to be increasingly marginalized, both in historiography and geography. Behind the prosperity of the discipline, a crisis has loomed. Based on this, this book attempts to sort out the development process of contemporary historical geography and its various sub-disciplines on the basis of previous academic reviews, point out the existing problems, and think about the future development direction. In addition, for the sake of completeness of the narrative and discussion, this book will also introduce and evaluate some influential or representative academic achievements, and in order to make up for the shortcomings of "breadth" and facilitate the use of historical geography beginners, some recommended books in related fields will be listed after each chapter for easy reference.
