This book systematically compiles the research results of mainland scholars exploring the social history of modern China between the founding of the People's Republic of China and 2019, and slightly traces the relevant academic sources before that.The book reviews the basic issues of theories and methods, paradigms and perspectives, academic schools and styles in the study of modern Chinese social history, and analyses the characteristics and trends of the discipline at different stages of its development; it also examines the study of topics such as population and the family, gender and marriage, social groups and associations, urban-rural and regional societies, social problems and social governance, social life, popular leisure and recreation, and Chinese religions and folk beliefs in modern China.It also provides an overview of the state of affairs in China, describes its lineage, and analyses its achievements and failures.In particular, a special introduction is made to the history and characteristics of the study of modern Chinese social and cultural history.
