本书是以田野回访为主的关于一个乡镇的民歌简史。

本书聚焦于江南一个公认的民歌之乡，在钩沉其历史的基础上，重点通过专题调査，展现新中国成立后该乡镇民歌如何在一系列重大政治思潮中发挥作用、同时自身不断被改造的过程，用以思考民间文学与主流意识形态的关系，辨析民歌自身的体用逻辑，希望对“大跃进民歌运动”的认知和评价，以及当代文学框架中如何对待民间文学等方面，提供一个完整的案例和别样的视角。
