Grounded in the broader context of political, economic and environmental change in China, this book examines the daily environmental experiences of villagers in a village in Inner Mongolia over several decades and the resulting ecological changes. It focuses on how women and men use and manage Bai Ran resources such as grasslands, land, trees, and water in their daily lives, and engage in farmland labour and activities that transform the Great Bai Ran.Based on ethnographic field research, this book reveals how institutional changes in the state, market, community and household shape the heterogeneous experiences of villagers of different genders, ages and ethnicities, which in turn affect local ecological landscapes. It also provides a microcosmic view of the environmental experiences and development patterns of rural western China over the past half-century.
