Sima Qian once expressed the sentiment that “water is beneficial and harmful”, and the ancient Chinese water conservancy has also been moisturized by the Yellow River for a hundred years before its slightly heavy history of river management. Zhang Xingzhao edited this book “Shang Dynasty Water Conservancy Research” to study the water conservancy of the Shang Dynasty, which is seldom involved in the academic world, combining limited documentary information with oracle bone inscriptions and archaeological excavations, and advancing academic research on hydrological environment, flood control, water transportation, irrigation of farmland, and water conservancy of the cities and towns, etc., which provides an opportunity for the Chinese water conservancy of this period of Chinese history, which seems to be thin, to be between the nearly legendary water control of Yu and the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period when there are records of exact water conservancy activities. Between the near-legendary water control by Dayu and the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period when there are definite records of water conservancy activities, it has added abundant materials to this period of China's water conservancy history which seems to be thin.
