This book provides readers with an overview of the evolution and transformation of the social security system since the PR China was established in 1949. By elaborating the developments of social security system in China from non-existence to full coverage, this book reveals social policy options under different economic conditions, underlines the structure of a social security system, and demonstrates the logic, context and steps towards realizing social ideals such as social equality, as well as the persistent efforts made by the Chinese toward such ideals. It shall also help readers better understand the social security with Chinese characteristics, and identify the main issues in China's social security system at present.
