20世纪50年代以来至今，中国社会科学院考古研究所相关考古工作队在西安及其附近地区进行的新石器时代晚期的半坡遗址、北首岭遗址，新石器时代中期的白家遗址、新石器时代早期的黄陵遗址等，先秦时代的长武先周遗址、西周周原遗址、丰镐遗址等，秦汉栎阳城遗址、秦阿房宫遗址与秦汉上林苑遗址、汉长安城遗址、汉宣帝杜陵陵园遗址、隋唐长安城遗址、隋仁寿宫与唐九成宫遗址、汉唐帝陵等考古工作，在中国考古学发展史上有着重要的学术意义。其中有些考古工作，对于中国考古学、历史学有着里程碑意义。

Since the 50s of the 20th century, the relevant archaeological team of the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has carried out the Banpo site in the late Neolithic period, the site of Beishouling, the site of Baijia in the middle of the Neolithic period, the site of Huangling in the early Neolithic period, the site of Changwu Xianzhou in the pre-Qin era, the site of the Zhou Yuan of Western Zhou, the site of Fenghao, etc., the site of Liyang City of Qin and Han, the site of Qin Afang Palace and the site of Shanglin Garden of Qin and Han, the site of Han Chang'an City, the site of Duling Tomb of Emperor Xuan of Han, the site of Chang'an City of Sui and Tang, Archaeological works such as the ruins of Sui Renshou Palace and Tang Jiucheng Palace, and the tombs of the Han and Tang emperors have important academic significance in the history of the development of Chinese archaeology. Some of these archaeological works are of landmark significance to Chinese archaeology and history.
