This book is a companion to The Road to Change: China's Film Industry in the New Century (China Social Sciences Press, 2019), and together with the author's Chinese Film and Television Culture at the Turn of the Century (published by Beijing Publishing House in 1998 and reprinted in 2015) and Across a Century: Chinese Cinema in the Context of Globalization (Tsinghua University Press, 2007), they constitute an interrelated "trilogy", which together become a complete memorandum on the 30-year development process of Chinese cinema from the 1990s to the 2020s. Evaluate, interpret and think. Taking China's political, economic and social changes as the background, this book systematically sorts out the evolution of Chinese film creation since the new century through the annual analysis of representative works, creators and theme types. This book attempts to present the ever-changing relationship between Chinese films and world cinema, the relationship between Chinese films and the society of the times, the relationship between Chinese films and the audience, the aesthetic system of Chinese films, the collective composition of Chinese films, the dissemination and influence of Chinese films, and the cultural orientation and genre characteristics of Chinese films, and deeply explores the dynamics, process, logic and effects of these changes.
