The driving force of economic growth is both scale factors and structural change factors. However, long-term economic growth is mainly achieved through structural changes. Economic development has different characteristics of structural changes at different income stages. In the process of moving from low-income to high-income in the world, only a few countries have successfully overcome the "middle-income trap" and achieved successful structural transformation. Before 1978, China's economic development relied on the planned economic system and the priority development strategy of heavy chemical industry to promote forced structural transformation. After the reform and opening up, China introduced a market economy and chose the development mode led by investment-driven, export-oriented and labor-intensive industries, so as to achieve two major steps in economic development. At present, China is very close to the threshold of high-income countries, can it successfully leapfrog and climb in the next step? This book argues that China has both great possibilities and many difficulties in overcoming the "middle-income trap", and that only by re-choosing the mode of development and promoting structural transformation through reform and opening up can it hope to move towards the ranks of developed high-income countries.
